National Geographic Grant for photographers 2010

The National Geographic Magazine Photography Grant represents the magazine’s ongoing commitment to documentary photojournalism.

The award for the 2010 grant will be $30,000. Proposals should be focused on a project that addresses the National Geographic Society’s mission to “inspire people to care about the planet.” The deadline for applying for the 2010 grant is March 1, 2010. The winner will be announced no later than June 1.

Two independent judges and one representative from National Geographic will select the grant recipient.
The judges will evaluate submissions for the Applicant’s ability to execute a focused and compelling visual story as a documentary feature, based on the National Geographic Society’s mission, “to inspire people to care about the planet.” The quality and caliber of the visual portfolio, the potential for the proposed project, and the professional ability of the Applicant all will be considered.

Eligibility: Worldwide (professional photojournalist)

Entry Fee: None

Prize: $30,000 (U.S. dollars)

How to apply?
Applications must be submitted on a single CD or DVD that can be read on both Mac and PC platforms, clearly labeled with the Applicant’s name. The Applicant should submit a hard copy of the completed application form with the Applicant’s signature and the disk to:

DO NOT include prints, transparencies, slides, or other materials. Judges will only consider digital images. National Geographic WILL NOT return such materials to the applicant. The only hard copy document that should be included with your submission is the application form.

National Geographic reserves the right to use the Grantee’s name, likeness, biographical information, and project images for publicity and promotional materials related to the National Geographic Grant.

Important dates:

  • Deadline: All applications must be received no later than March 1, 2010. Applications received after this date will not be entered into the competition.
  • Winner announcement The winner will be announced in early June, 2010. Applicants not selected for the Grant will be notified via email.
